II. Research Conducted
A. Students’ Academic Performance The impacts on children’s academic performance from kindergarten to 5th grade Project Investigators: Drs. Kay Kohlhaas, Hsin-Hui Lin, Kwang-Lee ChuThis is a serial of study by using Early Childhood Longitudinal Study –Kindergarten Cohort database. The purpose of these studies is to investigate children’s academic performance influence by various factors from kindergarten to 5th grade. This series of studies was started in year 2001. Dr. Kohlhaas and Kwang-Lee Chu joined the study in 2006. Dr. Chu is a psychometrician at Harcourt Assessment, Inc. We have done several studies and presented in national, regional, and state conferences. We are in the process of preparing manuscripts for journal submission.B. Teachers’ Teaching Preparation and Professional Development The study of teacher preparation and its impact on teachers’ professional development, job satisfaction, and retention Project Investigators: Drs. Hsin-Hui Lin and Kay KohlhaasThis project started in year 1992, when I was writing my master thesis. Over the past 13 years, I have helped several institutions on teacher preparation programs. Dr. Kohlhaas joined the study in 2006. We were very interested in conducting studies that compare and contrast the effects of teachers’ preparations impacts and its outcomes. Several studies have been presented in the national, regional, and state conferences. We are in the process of developing manuscripts for journal submission.C. Students’ Social and Emotional Development The investigation on children’s social and emotional development from early childhood to adolescence Project Investigators: Drs. Hsin-Hui Lin and Lynn FreemanEarly Childhood Longitudinal Study –Kindergarten Cohort databases are utilized for this series of studies. The purpose of these studies is to investigate children’s social emotional development. Dr. Freeman and I started this project in spring 2006. We have submitted the first proposal from this study to a national conference. We are continuously working on more in-depth analyses of this project. We are also collaborating on developing a manuscript for journal submission.D. Highly Qualified Teacher (HQT) Requirement on No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act.Project Investigators: Drs. Lynn Freeman, Hsin-Hui Lin, and Kay KohlhaasThis project started in spring 2007. The goal of this study is to compare and contrast the teacher certification policies in Texas that address the "highly qualified teacher (HQT)" requirement on NCLB Act with teachers who have proven knowledge of the subject matter. Records of teachers’ scores on the TExES examinations are being utilized to investigate teachers’ content competency as they relate to teacher certification. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) is currently considering changing teacher certification from “early childhood to fourth grade” to “Preschool education to sixth grade.” One purpose for this designation is to provide a larger number of qualified applicants to teach in the elementary and middle schools. However, this possible move raises many concerns. Some educators worry that teaching the principles of early childhood education will be ignored through this new initiative. Others fear that it will jeopardize middle school teachers’ competency on teaching in-depth curriculum, especially in math and science. The results of this study may guide Texas State policy makers to design the middle school teacher certification more effectively.
E. Teaching, Evaluations, and Learning in U. S. Kindergarten ClassroomsProject Investigators: Dr. Hsin-Hui Lin This project was started in year 2005. The purpose of this study is to seek effective teaching methods and evaluation to improve classroom teaching. Another dimension of this project is to study students’ school readiness as well as their learning outcomes. Several studies have been conducted and presented at national and regional conferences.
